GMAT که مخفف Graduate Management Admission Test است امروزه به یکی از مهم‌ترین ابزارهای سنجش بخشی از توانایی‌های متقاضیان شرکت در دوره‌های MBA(Master of Business Administration) و دوره‌های نزدیک و مشابه آن نظیر MPA) Master of Public Administration) شناخته شده است و تقریباً هیچ مدرسه، کالج یا دانشگاه معتبر برگزار کننده این دوره‌ها نیست که ارائه نمره GMAT را به عنوان یکی از شروط بررسی پرونده متقاضی اعلام نکند. همچنین تعداد زیادی از دانشگاه‌هایی که دروس Business در دوره دکترا (PhD) آنها نظیر امور مالی، حسابداری و اقتصاد حوزه اصلی محسوب می‌شود نمره این آزمون را شرط پذیرش فرد می‌دانند.
این آزمون به طور مستقل هیچ توانایی خاصی را در فرد محاسبه نمی‌کند بلکه ترکیبی از توانایی‌ها و مهارت‌های متنوع که برای یک دانشجوی فعال در حوزه مدیریت امور مالی، اقتصادی و اجرایی لازم است را بررسی می‌کند. به همین دلیل دارای هیچ میزانی به عنوان نمره رد یا قبول نیست و این مراکز آموزشی، کالج‌ها و دانشگاه‌ها هستند که هر یک به فراخور برنامه‌های آموزشی خود حداقل نمره قابل قبول را اعلام کنند لذا ممکن است فردی با داشتن یک نمره متوسط بتواند برای برخی از این مراکز تقاضای ثبت‌نام دهد و برای برخی دیگر خیر. واضح است که هر مدرسه‌ای که دوره معتبرتری را ارائه می‌دهد نمره بالاتری را هم طلب می‌کند.
